Baku Plans to Close Russian-Language Schools, Media Reports
2 JUL 2025 09:07
All Russian-language schools in Azerbaijan will soon be closed: parents have already received notifications about a phased closure, Azerbaijani media outlets are reporting. As Oxu.Az writes, parents of students received notifications about this through school WhatsApp groups. According to the disseminated information, this measure is aimed at "strengthening the position of the Azerbaijani language as the main language of education." It is planned that the schools will transition to teaching in Azerbaijani within three years.
Let us recall that in August 2024, the President of Azerbaijan announced that there are 324 Russian-language schools operating in the country. According to him, 160,000 children study in these schools, and another 800,000 students learn Russian as a second language.
The news about the possible closure of Russian-language schools has appeared against the backdrop of a significant deterioration in relations between Moscow and Baku.
