Azerbaijani Official: Peace Treaty Requires Armenian Constitutional Change

Elchin Amirbekov, the representative of the President of Azerbaijan for special assignments, has stated that after the initialing of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, a new historical period is beginning in the region.
In an interview with the Austrian "Austria Press Agentur," he presented Baku's vision for establishing long-term peace, while at the same time pointing out the existing obstacles. Amirbekov, in particular, emphasized the problem stemming from Armenia's current Constitution. According to him, the preamble of the Constitution contains territorial claims regarding Nagorno-Karabakh, which hinders a final settlement. "The peace treaty to be signed provides for the mutual renunciation of territorial claims," he noted, emphasizing that this is one of the main conditions for achieving stability.
As an important step towards establishing long-term peace and stability in the region, Amirbekov mentioned the construction of a 43-kilometer road and railway, which, according to him, should pass through the territory of Armenia and connect the western regions of Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan.
He presented this project not only as a unification of the two parts of Azerbaijan, but also as an opportunity for communication between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as between Asia and Europe. Amirbekov mentioned that this project, traditionally known as the "Zangezur corridor," received a new name in Washington: "Trump's route for international peace and prosperity."
Referring to Iran's criticism, the Azerbaijani official noted: "This is a peace project from which all countries in the region can benefit if there is political will."
According to Amirbekov, after the agreements reached in Washington in August, Baku considers it important to inform its European partners, including the Austrians, about the new situation in the South Caucasus and the great opportunities for peace.
