Armenia's Murder Rate Half of Global Average, MIA Says

According to the nine-month data for 2025, in the overall crime picture in the Republic of Armenia, we have a significant increase in the detection of crimes considered latent, announced Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan in the National Assembly. Addressing the topic of murders and the public discourse around it, Sargsyan noted that in terms of the number of murders, the Republic of Armenia is positioned significantly below the international average.
"Murders constitute only 0.2 percent of our overall crime structure. Referring to global murder statistics in general, dear colleagues, so that we can also picture Armenia's position from this perspective, I will refer to the global homicide reports of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, which periodically review the overall picture of murders in different countries with corresponding indices and provide assessments. The index is mainly compiled based on the calculation of murders per 100,000 population, and I must state that in 2021, the overall global average was 5.8 cases per 100,000 population. Moreover, this assessment is periodic, and the UN regularly updates these assessments every four to five years. Armenia continues to register figures below the global average, meaning when we say below-average figures, this is a positive result because if, on a global level, an average of 5.8 murders are recorded per 100,000 population, in Armenia this figure was two in 2021, 1.9 in 2022, 1.8 in 2023, and two in 2024. You can clearly see that we have a decrease of almost more than double, so to speak, from the overall global average," the Minister of Internal Affairs noted.
