At its session on October 30, the Government approved the signing of the financing agreement "Strengthening Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection in Armenia" between the Republic of Armenia and the European Commission. As reported by "Armenpress," Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Davit Khudatyan noted that the main objective of the agreement is to support the strengthening of nuclear safety and radiation protection in Armenia, within which Armenia will be allocated financial assistance of €5 million to solve a number of important problems.
"After the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, the risks of existing nuclear power plants were calculated, and based on that, stress tests were developed to identify what problems could arise in the event of potential accidents, and funds are being allocated sequentially to solve these problems.
The €5 million agreement concerns addressing the hydrogen generated in the event of an accident," Khudatyan detailed. The Minister noted that the document approved by the Government is a continuation of the agreement adopted in 2024, under which Armenia was already allocated €12.9 million for the specified purpose, aimed at managing hydrogen-related accidents. Part of the €5 million sum will be used to purchase equipment that carries out hydrogen combustion. It will be provided to the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant.
