World's First "Superhorses" Created in Argentina

Scientists at the Argentine biotechnology company Kheiron have created the world's first genetically edited horses using CRISPR-Cas9 technology. The genes of Argentina's prize-winning horse, Polo Pureza, were used as a basis, which were modified to produce five genetically edited horses. They will surpass the polo legend in their speed, endurance, and other qualities.
"We do this through the technique of so-called genetic scissors, which are molecular tools that allow us to reach any part of the genome, make a precise cut, and introduce a change into that genome," said Gabriel Vichera, co-founder and scientific director of Kheiron. He noted that these horses comply with Argentina's current regulations and are not considered genetic doping or genetically modified organisms.
