28 AUG 2025 15:05
During the court hearing in the ongoing case of the Primate of the Diocese of Shirak, Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan, at the Criminal Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan, the public prosecutor, delivering his closing speech, motioned to find the clergyman guilty. Prosecutor Vahan Harutyunyan quoted excerpts from Archbishop Mikael's interviews with media, where the prosecutors recorded calls aimed at seizing power.
Archbishop Mikael's defense attorney, Yerem Sargsyan, addressing the court, stated that they will refute the charges, regardless of the fact that "the presiding judge has long known that he must convict His Eminence Archbishop Mikael and has no other choice but to find him guilty." In any case, during the court session, Sargsyan motioned to declare Ajapahyan's innocence and deliver an acquittal verdict.
No verdict was reached in Archbishop Mikael's case on August 28. The court hearing will continue on September 2 at 14:30.
