7.4 Quake Hits Philippines, Tsunami Warning Issued
10 OCT 2025 06:02
On October 10, a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the underground tremor was recorded at a depth of 62 km (about 38.5 miles).շ
Immediately after the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System announced that dangerous waves are possible in coastal areas within a 300 km (186 mile) radius of the epicenter. The Philippine seismological agency also issued a warning, calling on residents of the central and southern coastal regions to immediately evacuate to higher ground. The agency's message stated that waves of "life-threatening height" are expected. A tsunami risk has also been declared for parts of Indonesia and Palau.
According to preliminary data, there have been no reports of destruction or casualties yet, but authorities have warned of possible damage and aftershocks, especially in the province of Davao Oriental and surrounding areas. Emergency services have been put on high alert.
The international community is closely monitoring the developing events in the Philippines. United States President Donald Trump has expressed his concern over the incident. The White House reported that the president has been briefed on the situation, and the US is ready to provide assistance to the government and people of the Philippines in overcoming the consequences of the disaster if necessary.
The Philippines is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a zone of high seismic activity, and frequently suffers from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country's authorities and population are constantly prepared for such natural disasters, but each new powerful tremor becomes a serious challenge for rescue services and infrastructure. Local authorities continue to assess the situation, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow official announcements.
